St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital Hosts Local High School Students During Health Care Careers Week

Students learn about the benefits the community hospital offers

COALDALE, PA – (11/14/2008) – In celebration of Health Care Careers Week, St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital and Pennsylvania CareerLink coordinated a program to teach high school students about career opportunities in health care.

Approximately 15 Marian High School students who are interested in continuing their studies in the health care industry visited the hospital today to learn about careers in the health care field and tour the facility. “I am pleased that we are able to afford students who are interested in pursuing careers in the health care field with the opportunity to see first hand what a day in a community hospital may be like for them if they choose to enter the field,” said St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital President, William Crossin. “It is encouraging for me to see the youth in our community be excited to learn more about the field of medicine in taking advantage of this opportunity.”

"At the CareerLink we are glad to be a partner in this initiative. We have the opportunity to bring valuable career information to our students to assist them with their educational and career paths. Jobs in health care fields are in high demand and offer above average wages with opportunities for advancement,” said Elaine R. Jones, CareerLink Specialist. “We are also very happy to partner with St. Luke's Miners to give our local students the experience of seeing first-hand the types of jobs that are preformed in various departments within a hospital setting. After all, the students we help today will be the students taking care of us in the future. What better way to prepare for our future than by helping, guiding and preparing our students for their own futures?"

The tour included visits to the Emergency Department, Radiology Department, Cardio-Pulmonary Department and St. Luke's Miners Memorial Geriatric Center. A question and answer session followed the tour where the students were able to interact further with medical staff. To wrap up the day, they enjoyed lunch in the hospital's cafeteria.

PA Health Careers Week, an initiative from the Governor's Office and administered through the local workforce investment areas, is November 10 - 14, 2008. The Health Careers Awareness activities in Schuylkill County were administrated by the Luzerne/Schuylkill Workforce Investment Board and coordinated locally by the PA CareerLink Schuylkill County. The purpose of these events and activities is to bring attention to the many job opportunities available in these high-demand health care fields. By 2014*, there will be 128,120 openings for Registered Nurses in PA. There will be 11,730 openings statewide for pharmacists and 9,400 openings for physical therapists. PA will need 114,170 home health aides, nurse aides, orderlies, and attendants. These and many other health care occupations pay well and offer opportunities for advancement.

    More Funding for Upper Perkiomen Outpatient Center Ed Nawrocki, president, St. Luke’s Quakertown Hospital, hosted a press conference to announce $250,000 in funds secured through the efforts of State Representative Robert Mensch. The funds will go toward the continued development of the St. Luke’s Upper Perkiomen Outpatient Center at Rtes. 663 and Geryville Pike in Pennsburg. Mensch’s contribution complements $500,000 in funds provided by State Senator Robert Wonderling in November 2006 to support the economic development plans in the Upper Perkiomen Valley. The discussion highlighted the progress of construction, timeline to opening doors to the public and the impact these new services will have on local residents.
